Behind the Paw – Bowie the Petface Ambassador

Bowie, nicknamed “Bowie Bear” as his front paws look like a bears, is an Apex Goberian, a breed known for their high intelligence, friendly, playful and mischievous nature.

The origin of the Goberian is not widely documented, first appearing in the early 2000s, but the lineage is a mix of Golden Retriever originating in Scotland and the Husky from either Alaska or Siberia.

Bowie has been with his hoomum in Kent for 5.5 months, where he loves to play hide and seek, blowing bubbles in his water bowl and playing with his Petface dragon and carrot toys. During this time, he has supported his hoomum as a therapy service dog after she sadly lost her parents and developed PTSD.

When asking his hoomum about the most rewarding thing about being a pet owner: “those morning greetings and watching Bowie’s personality come shining through. He never lets me get too upset when I miss my Mum or Dad and always makes me laugh.”

Sadly, Bowie’s early start in life has not been without tragedy. Whilst doing his training in a public park, his hind was accidently crushed when a man lost his balance and fell on him. After several operations, this has left him mainly housebound, only able to do low intensity play outside and undergoing intense physiotherapy.

His hoomum still tries to keep him mentally active with fun and engaging games, from placing food in icecubes for sliding on the floor, to introducing him to new experiences around the home and a selection of Petface toys for playtime.

His hooman told Petface that “pets can have different reasons for coming into our lives, from mental health support, for the company and affection, or to simply bring a little light on positivity. For me, Bowie saved my soul and constantly reminds me that I’ll get the ‘me’ back through our play and cuddle times until he fully recovers on a 6 month journey. It’s all about teamwork for each other.”
